olivier debré

and the ccc od

The Debré Donation in 2008 gave rise to the new project of the eponymous center for contemporary creation. The idea was to bring together in one place the collection of a historic artist and the experimental mission that the art center had been carrying out since 1985. Olivier Debré's heirs donated part of their father's works to Tours Métropole Val de Loire, owner of the CCC OD building. Since 2016, the art center ensures the conservation and dissemination of this donation. It also promotes the works of the artist through temporary exhibitions (in and outside the walls; personal or collective) and works to develop the catalog raisonné of his paintings. Since March 2021, the CCC OD also offers to discover the different facets of the work of Olivier Debré (1920-1999) through the series "Le CCC OD raconte Olivier Debré", offering each month a new thematic episode.

The Debré Donation consists of five emblematic works that Olivier Debré created especially for his 1991 exhibition in the former premises of the art center, then called the CCC. These paintings are among the largest formats the artist ever executed, with their record dimensions of four meters by nine and a half meters.

In addition to these monumental works, there is a selection of 150 graphic works from various periods, representative of the whole of the painter’s research. Dated from the 1940s to the 1990s, they testify to the ever-experimental nature of the artist’s work, from the geometric compositions of the post-war period to the large “character signs” created in ink in a direct and spontaneous manner, via the large abstract landscapes created in charcoal in the 1960s-1970s.

These works were brought to the CCC OD in 2016. Since then, several restoration campaigns have already been carried out to restore approximately one third of the works in this Donation to their full glory so that they can be exhibited to the public. Other restoration campaigns will be scheduled in the near future.

Since 2016, the operation of the CCC OD has been equipped with a research component that has in particular the project to carry out, in collaboration with the artist’s heirs, the catalog raisonné of Olivier Debré’s paintings. The purpose of a catalog raisonné is to list and locate all the works created by an artist. It provides a complete history tracing the life of each work (provenance, exhibitions, bibliography). It thus aims to gather elements allowing the most complete knowledge possible of an artist’s work, presented in a form that is at once descriptive, analytical and critical.
