roman opalka
Born in 1931 in Hocquincourt (France). Died in 2011 in Chieti (Italy).
exhibition at CCC : "Opalka 1965/1-∞" in 1986.
Roman Opalka comes from a Polish background studied at the School of Fine Art in Lodz and Academy of Fina Arts of Warsaw where he discovered drawing, painting, engraving and sculpture from the 1960s onwards. This is when he started to work on the issue of time.
In 1965, painting his first “Detail”, he began a work which was to become his ‘project for life’, intertwining with the very core of his existence. On canvasses he painted numbers counting from 1 to infinite, then recorded and photographed his own face after each painting session. This unique piece of work, a programme of a whole life, is an attempt to make it possible to visualise time.
